It’s the perfect day to spend some time thinking about a little spot of sunlight in our gardens. This little flower produces an oil used in some of our favorite Inlight skincare products. Today, let’s learn about why Inlight loves calendula, more commonly known as marigold. Do you have this beautiful flower in your garden? It has powerful healing properties and Dr. Spiezia, skin expert and Inlight formulator, uses it in many of his products.
Calendula oil extract comes from the beautiful marigold flower. It is from the Asteraceae or Aster star family and it originated in North Africa. The name comes from the Latin and means “first day of the month.” The calendula can flower most months from spring through autumn, which means it brings is bright orange color to our gardens for a long time. The plant can produce up to 60 flower heads every year!
The calendula follows the direction of the sun, like the sunflower. It’s orange and yellow colors are connected to the third Chakra, or the solar plexus. The solar plexus is the center of energy and power in the human energy body.
Calendula oil is a very soothing, mild extract. It’s gentle power is wonderful for sensitive skin. This calming oil is cherished as a major component of many Inlight products. At Inlight, Dr. Spiezia infuses calendula oil into the organic, extra-virgin olive oil he uses to produce Inlight’s extraordinary herbal oils. He also uses calendula oil in many of the Inlight balms such as the Night Balm, (wake up glowing) Foot and Leg Balm (great for cracked heels) and the Skin Easy Balm (excellent for breakouts). This incredible oil combines especially well with some of our other oils to enhance moisturizing properties and cell regeneration.
This soothing mild oil is an extraordinarily healthy food for the skin. Calendula oil has many powerful healing properties. It is very versatile and nourishes the skin. Calendula is packed full of carotenoids in those yellow and orange pigments. These carotenoids include beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein and xanthophyll. Why does that matter to you? Because these are the anti-aging powerhouses. They are full of antioxidants, which knock out those free radicals that cause signs of aging.
Calendula oil provides many healing properties to the skin. It has anti-inflammatory properties and antifungal properties. Is useful for treating dermatitis, keratosis, acne, spots, burns and cuts, varicose veins, sun burns, acne rosacea, mosquito bites, skin infection and fungus, etc.
It is antibacterial and antiviral as well. It fights staph and strep (Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus beta-haemolyticus.) Calendula oil helps both the immune system and the vascular (blood) system. WHEW! That’s a whole lof of goodness in one little oil, isn’t it? It’s easy to see why it’s such a favorite for Inlight products like the Chocolate Face Mask, Body Butter and the Body Oil with Arnica.
If that’s not enough, when used internally, calendula oil can help with menstrual problems, bowel inflammation and gastritis.
